The Hawar Island
are spectacular archipelago of small desert Islands and
islets surrounded by shallow seas, located about 20
kilometers south of mainland Bahrain.
Declared a nature reserve in 1996, they represent at the
last remaining habitat of its kind in the Gulf. They are
home to the largest colony in the world - over 200,000
birds - of the black Socotra Cormorant
Also to be found here, is the rare Sooty Falcon, a
summer visitor that nests beneath projecting ledges on
the cliff faces, before returning home to Madagascar.
Flocks of pink Flamingos are also to be seen, adding
additional color and spectacle.
Situated on the largest of the Hawar Islands, the Hawar
